In Clay County, intense winds caused a tree to fall on a 115,000 volt transmission line that powers the Salt Springs substation, said a news release from Clay Electric Cooperative. Although many people reported a tornado in the area, the National Weather Service in Jacksonville determined the damage was caused by a microburst, which is a series of intense downburst winds during a thunderstorm, said Phil Peterson, a meteorologist with the NWS Jacksonville office.
Severe thunderstorms like the one on Sunday are difficult to predict, but most common during the summer months, especially in June, Peterson said. Officials recommend that residents stay indoors, keep away from windows and unplug their appliances during this time.
On Monday, crews at The Reserve at Kanapaha complex removed limbs from the large oak tree still stuck in the units, said Renee Douglass, a community manager at the complex. Douglass added that the injured girl and mother who were rescued from the unit are still at the hospital, but remain in good condition. when the storm became more severe.
